[Jean's up late, because she doesn't dare sleep. She doesn't want her mind to pull her back to a different life; a life full of gushing blood and twisted metal.

It's not worse, exactly, than feeling D'Bari die. But knowing she's capable of it without any influence, any corruption - it makes her feel sick inside.

Her fingers twist in her hair as she speaks, solemnly pensive.]

It's funny, isn't it? How one little change can turn us into something we've been fighting most of our lives. [All it took was Magneto finding her first.]

What was it?

[ They don't know each other well, but sometimes it's easier to get things off a person's chest that way. Nathan's been talking for five days; listening sounds pretty good right now. ]

[ Still an awkward puppy. ]

[Her eyes widen, slightly; part of her was just speaking into the void, not expecting an answer. But then she smiles, just a little. He barely knows her, but he wants to help.

Who knows, maybe it will.]

My first ability was telepathy. In my past - Charles Xavier found me. Helped me.

[ Comprehension lights in his eyes, tongue touching the backs of his teeth. He remembers what she said about when it manifested. ]

Not this time?

[ The question is not quite sure how it wants to frame itself; his experiences with Charles on the other Barge were 50% invasive and 50% total inability to communicate. ]

No. [Her brow furrows. How can she - ]

You know Erik? He's...different, in my world. [Not quite as much as she thought; he can be protective, and patient, and even nurturing. Who could say, of course, how much of it was a lie.]

He's been Magneto for a long time.

[ Nathan's mouth skews a little grim; he has no anti-mutant sentiment, but zealotry strikes a pretty strong chord in him. Whether it was the Rev and his war on the Troubled, or the Guard and their mission to protect the same at any cost, zealots get people killed.

And he remembers Alex's staunch refusal to refer to himself as anything but Havok. ]

I know him a little.

[ Although the Erik he's spoken to a handful of times hasn't struck Nathan that way, well--for one thing he's had the Full Mirror Barge experience now. ]

Take it that changes things.

Yeah. [Her fingers are all tangled up in her hair, now, but she barely notices.] He's - more of a symbol than a person. [The same, she supposes, could be said of Charles - but he didn't just make them soldiers, he made them family.]

And it's a symbol of [power, rebellion, revolution] superiority. Mutiny. He thought the only way to protect mutants was to conquer humans.

Charles, he wanted us to co-exist. He taught me to fight for equality. For peace.

[ ...oh. A confused scatter of expression crosses Nathan's features; dawning realization and camaraderie, a wince and simmering directionless anger all at once. ]

Sounds like home. 's like you're stuck in a war zone even when things are quiet.

[ As if they ...ever are. For either of them. ]

She thought he might understand, when she first spoke to him, but this - yes. He gets it.

Her smile is sad.]

We never got a choice.

Not when you're born into it.

[ It's almost funny, when he thinks of how many people have tried to leave Haven, and how that never seems to work out.

(It's not funny.) ]

You can try to ignore it, but... [She shakes her head. She thinks of Dazzler, who only ever wanted to sing. Kitty Pryde, who can never just be a teenage girl.]

Charles wanted that. For people to be able to lead normal lives, one day. For it not to matter how you were born.

Wasn't exactly his M.O. when I met him.

[ Still, he knows Charles as he is here, at least a little. Enough that the complications from the Mirror Barge discomfit. ]

[A wry smile.] No. He changed the same way I did, more or less.

[Alex doesn't want to speak. Not at all, not to anyone. But if she's worrying, he should - say something. Even if she's not, he should say something. It's just a matter of what.]

I think if one more person tells me it's not my fault I might scream.

[Well. That's. Something.]

[She can't quite suppress the smile, the utter relief that he's okay.

Well. Relatively. Her smile twists, turns into something bleak and sad.]

It wasn't us, but it was.

I can still feel him being part of me.

Me too. Her, I mean. All of that - that bitterness. Loneliness. Anger.

He just didn't want to be alone. He didn't care about much of anything but not being alone.

He wasn't.

She didn't - I didn't care about a lot of people. I was afraid. But you were still family.
